Litter Training Cats to use a litter box is an essential part of being a cat owner. Without this your furry little pal will make a mess of your home and can grow up ignoring your commands and be generally bad behaved. By training your kitten to do something as small as using the litter box, you can make sure that you and your pet have a long and happy relationship.

Although cat tricks are not commonly taught to most household cats, they can be as amazing as teaching a cat to use the toilet and to play fetch has been reported. Although most cat owners are just happy with a friendly cat that knows where to do its business and that doesn't rip the sofa to shreds!

Aside from the obvious things to teach your furry little friend, you may wish to consider behavioral type training in which you allow your animal to socialize with others even though you do not already have other pets in the home. This allows life to be much easier if you should decide to get a new kitten at some point of if you have any intentions of getting a dog as well.

There are four main stages to training your cat to use a litter box. A couple of these stages will be basic common sense while one or two of them may be useful toilet training tips that you may not have thought of. Either way, these could save your sanity and your carpets!

1. Buy 2 litter boxes. Why I hear you ask? Well, the first one should be shallow and small, perfect for little kittens to be able to climb in and out of and still have room to do its business happily. The litter needs to be deep enough to cover and solid matter as well as being shallow enough to stop the cat from scattering it all over your floor. The second litter box should be much bigger, for when your kitten gets older. As it grows, your cat will need deeper litter and also a bigger tray to be able to move around in.

2. Buy your cat litter from a reliable source. This is one of the least known toilet training tips but is also one of the most important. Your cat can grow to recognize the litter you have bought and when you buy a different brand he or she can refuse to use it. By buying a brand that is well known that you know you can always buy, you can ensure that your cat will never stick his or her nose up at the litter you are buying. (For a great money saving tip, try using a cheaper brand right from the beginning as you may not be able to swap it for a cheaper brand later on!)

3. Whenever your cat or kitten squats, scratches or generally looks as though he or she is about to use your sofa, bed, carpet or any other area of the house as a toilet, pick them up and move them to the litter tray. This will take a couple of go's to get it right but you will soon learn the signs and the cat will soon learn to use the litter tray.

4. Praise your cat. As training tips go, this is the most obvious yet so many people forget about this step. If your cat uses the litter tray, give them a treat, cuddle them or play with them, do whatever the cat likes to do and he or she will soon come to the conclusion that using the litter tray is a good thing and should continue to do so.

Cat Toilet

Cat Toilet

This may sound ridiculous or like a near-impossible feat, but you'll find life is a pleasant new world when you finish potty training your cat. You'll have a very low-maintenance cat and she will also make a great conversation starter. And, you even save money on cat litter when you are done with potty training. If you want more detailed information than you'll find here on potty training, try a library or book store. In the mean time, I'll give you enough of a basic overview of cat toilet training that you probably won't need one of these books to successfully undertake potty training. The main thing you need to keep in mind as you go about cat toilet training is that cats require a lot of patience, with punishments being a very ineffective training method.

You will need to have a litter box, flushable cat litter, a bowl that fits inside your toilet, and a stool that stands approximately even with toilet. You will want to have your current litter box next to the toilet where you want your cat to potty for several days before you begin the process. This way she will get used to the location before you begin with potty training.

When you notice that your cat is consistently comfortably using the new box location, you can begin toilet training. To do this, simply move the litter box up about two inches by placing it on a phone book or other solid object, and start using the flushable litter at this point. After the cat has used the new location a few times, you can continue toilet training by putting the litter box on the stool up against the toilet. Make sure it is easy for the cat to get to this location and that the litter box is very firmly placed. Also, make sure the lid on the toilet seat is down. If the litter box ever dumps the cat during cat toilet training or she ever falls in the toilet, you may do irreversible damage to your cause.

After the cat has successfully used the new box location, your are again ready to proceed to the next step in the cat toilet training process. For this step, you want to place flushable litter in the bowl and put the bowl in the toilet. This is the trickiest part of the procedure, so be patient with your little friend at this point. You will want to leave this bowl here until your cat has reached the point in its cat toilet training that it is comfortable enough to use the bowl without having to step down into it. This will probably take the longest time of any of the procedures.

When the cat looks comfortable using the cat bowl inside the toilet, you're ready to proceed with potty training your cat once again. This time, you will remove the bowl so she will have only two choices: Continue going in the toilet or find a new place in the house to go. In most cases she will finish the cat toilet training process successfully by continuing to use the toilet. If not, you may want to put the bowl back in the toilet for a couple of days. Then, when you again remove the bowl, put the cat on the toilet five minutes after each meal and lock it in the bathroom for up to ten minutes. This should give your cat the general idea.

Toilet Train Your Cat

Michael Porteous asked:

Toilet Train Your Cat

If you own a cat then you know of the terrible smell of cat urine and you know of the endless task of cleaning up the floor and kitty litter of their misplaced waste. It is awful, demeaning and disgusting work but we love our cats and dutifully clean up after them. There is however an easier way and while it seems bizarre has been successfully done all over the world by cat owners who know how and that is toilet training your cat!

If cats can learn to use their kitty litter why can they not be able to use a human toilet? As odd as it may seem to see a cat perched upon the bowl it is easy for an agile cat to do and allows easy removal of waste from your house with no effort except to flush! Not only will this save your house from kitty waste and smells it saves you a fortune in cat litter too! So how can it be done? The trick is to take it slowly.

First you must have a plan to gradually put the cat into the right frame of mind to learn a new way of doing things, cat owners know just how stubborn and willful cats can be and so will understand! You must continually be positive and reward the cat with attention when they do things right but not always with treats as they come to expect food if you do this too often and if it does not come they lose interest in the entire process.

Next you must gradually move the kitty litter closer to the toilet in very small steps over many days, big changes may confuse the cat or make it suspicious so just edge it closer to the bowl every time you clean it out and refill it.

As long as your cat responds well to this you can then move to the next stage which is actually putting the litter on top of the toilet seat. There is a bit of an art to getting your cat to do this bit but they must learn to jump up and use their litter on the bowl or they will never learn to use it without it.

Now you can probably see the pattern here, if you continue gradually moving the litter to the right place you will soon be able to remove the kitty litter completely and you now have a better trained cat! Toilet training your cat is not quite as easy as this but this is the general overview of what needs to be done.
